It varied, but prisoners of the Communist faction seem to report the
Chinese were more concerned with "rehabilitation" than retribution.
There's an article in Cook & Cook (I believe) about it, and Ienaga goes
on about it incessantly (though, of course, he's a tad prejudiced.)

The KMT seems to have been less kind, and then, of course, there were
the Soviets...
