凍えるセールスマン

自動車が、ノースダコタで最近の 吹雪でできた
雪だまりで立ち往生し、絶望的になっている旅行
中のセールスマンがいました。
一番近い農家に着くのに数時間かかりました。半
ば凍死しそうになりながら、正面玄関にたどり着き
ノックしました。白髪まじりの年老いた農夫が応対
に出てきました。そこでセールスマンは一夜をしの
げる場所が欲しいと懇請しました。『どうぞ、どうぞ
若いお兄さん、寝る場所は提供できますよ』と、もて
なしの良い老人は言いました。
『貴男が冗談まじりに聞いてるような、ベッドを共に
するような娘はいません』
『あぁ』とセールスマンは言った。

それから、ちよっとして言った。『隣の家までどれぐ
らいの距離がありますか？』
