若者のマフィは、ダブリンに本拠を置くアイルランド
系の会社の技師の職に応募しました。一人の
アメリカ人も同じ仕事に応募しました。二人の応募
者は同じ資格を持っていたので、部門責任者に
テストを受けるように要請されました。

テストば終わった時点で、マフィの所に行き言いま
した。『関心を持ってくれて有難うございます。
我が社はアメリカ人にこの仕事を与えることに決め
ました』
マフィはたずねました。『どうしてそんな事をするので
すか？私達二人は九つの問題に正解しているんです。
この社は、本社がアイルランドにあるし、私はアイル
ランド人です。私が仕事を貰うべきです。』
責任者は言いました。『我々は、正解よりむしろ
君が間違った問題で裁定を下したのです』
『じゃぁ、同じ間違いをしたのに、どうして彼の方が
ベターだとされるのですか？』とマフィは訊いた。
責任者は答えた。『簡単です。アメリカ人は５番目
の問題に“分かりません”と書きました。君は
“私も同様にわかりません”と書いたからです』
