On the other hand, EVA-02 was trashed with extreme prejudice by the
MPEs.  And even if the entry plug protected Asuka from the lances
and tearing apart, she could easily have gotten banged up after 
our last sight of her to the point that she NEEDS those bandages...

Also, I'd point out that we don't see Rei comes for Asuka; it may
be that she and Shnji were the only ones who came through Third
Impact with their AT fields intact.

Actually, the FIRST time Shinji sees Rei is that unexplained
spectral appearance just before the Angel attack...

Without Rei, I don't think he does.
