everyone's got their own interpretation of NGE.

Asuka crumbled near the end because she expected to come out on top, to be
the best of everything, to win every fight and confrontation. She not
only got defeated by the angels, but in her eyes by Shinji as well. She
thought she was the best, and that she had to be tough and strong to
survive by herself, that she don't need anyone, that she can go on without
her mother... that she can fight her own battles and not have to be
rescued by Shinji. But after continual defeat she had to face the facts -
that she wasn't as tough and invincible as she thought she was. That
realisation crushed her will completely.

Shinji thinks of himself as being weak and useless, and feels that nothing
he does matters. He hates pain - pain of all kinds, but especially that
of not being accepted, of being hated and rejected. But in some ways
defeat and pain and sorrow doesn't really bother him since in his mind,
even before an confrontation's begun he has already lost. In his mind he
is weak. He is pathetic. No one likes him. No one approves of him...
It is easier for him to think that way then to try and be strong. He is
running away from all the hard roads in life, taking all the easy roads.

In Asuka's mind the world is filled with people, people who all loves her,
admires her and praises her. In Shinji's mind he is all alone in a world
full of strangers who hates or ignores him, in his mind he is lowly,
cowardly, unworthy. He is used to being alone so that when the world
around him crumbles, and he finds myself becoming more and more alone he
was still able to function, where as Asuka wasn't used to that feeling and
was unable to cope.

Shinji crumbles later on after meeting Kowru, whom he thought of not as an
angel, but as a kindred spirit. Shinji longs for words like "I love you"
from people around him is whole life, especailly from his father. All he
ever wanted was to be loved and appreciated, but he has always been
alone. Kowru was probably the only person Shinji ever felt truly open and
comfortable with, and that Kowru was the only one around who truly
understands him and apprecaites him for who he is. Shinji realises that
killing angels earns him appreciation from the people around him, so he
keeps on doing it time and again. But when he realises that Kowru was an
angel, and when he was forced to kill him... it was just too much for him
to bear...

sorry, I forgot why I'm writing, so I'll stop now.
