Certain dialects seem to have better reputations than others.
Tochigi-ites seem to have a very negative view of their own dialect,
and often deny that they use certain elements of it or even that those
elements exist at all (even though they do use them daily). They
frequently discouraged me from learning any Tochigi-ben and often
called it "kitanai" or "hazukashii". This seems to be a stark
contrast to Kyoto, for instance, which is generally very proud of its
dialect.
