If you can get the computer running and able to read a pcmcia memory
card (or a card of any type put into a pcmcia adaptor, eg. compact
flash) - then all you have to do is run the windows xp setup from the
card and windows will work... that is the way I first did it. I had
windows98 running on the machine but it was crashing, when I ran the xp
setup from my SD card in an adaptor - the setup replaced 98 and the
laptop is now ok. I didn't format - I just ran XP setup over the top of
Windows 98.

You can't use a usb key as far as I know - I don't think xp will be able
to read it for setup to complete.

If you have the multimedia port replicator - then install the cdrom into
it and set your BIOS to boot from the cdrom.
WindowsXP will start ok and you should be able to format and reload as
normal.
Don't use your PCMCIA cdrom or drivers in addition to the multimedia
port replicator with the cdrom in it - you'll probably get a conflict.
