Silence/沈黙
I'm reading Shusaku Endo's novel "Silence" (沈黙) in the Japanese.
I thought that I had read an English translation many years ago, but
there are enough differences in the Japanese version that either my
memory of the novel is very poor, or I actually read a translation of
"The Golden Country" instead.
My impression of Endo after my (possible) first reading was that he
wasn't a very good Catholic, but I have read some reviews recently that
indicated he was deeper than I gave him credit.
So far, the Japanese novel is very good. Endo's style reminds me of
Kenji Miyazawa.
My additional decades of experience with Japan, Japanese, Catholicism,
and life in general may improve my appreciation of Endo and his writing.
