ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Mattias Bengsston is President of the Centre for the New Europe
(http://www.cne.org/index.htm), the Brussels-based free market think
tank and former Director of Timbro, the Swedish free market institute,
former Chairman of the Swedish branch of the European Democrat Students,
and before that the leader writer, columnist and deputy political
editor-in-chief at Svenska Dagbladet, a Swedish conservative daily
newspaper. He is the co-editor, with Johan Norberg of Frihetens
Klassiker, an anthology of libertarian thought.
Prof. Gabriel Calzada is Associate Professor of Economics at the King
Juan Carlos University in Spain and Founder-President of the libertarian
think tank Instituto Juan de Mariana. He is also Vice-Director of the
Austrian School-oriented scholarly Procesos de Mercado. He has been a
Rowley Fellow of the Ludwig von Mises Institute and is currently a
Fellow of the Centre for the New Europe. He is a frequent broadcaster on
television and has written extensively for such publications as Libertad
Digital, Spanish Herald, Expansion, Mises Daily, The Journal of
Libertarian Studies, Procesos de Mercados, La Ilustracion Liberal, and
Canarias Liberal.
Ben Cosin was formerly Lecturer in Sociology at the School of Education,
The Open University. He has contributed to such journals as Theoretical
Practice, Journal for the Theory of Social Behavior, Economy and Society
and Fabian Review, and is the author of such papers as "Critical
Empiricism Criticized: The Case of Freud" and "Structures without
Politics". He is also editor of a number of works, including Diversity
and Change: Education, Policy and Selection, Education, Policy and
Society: Theoretical Perspectives, School and Society: A Sociological
Reader, and School, Work and Equality: A Reader. He was Secretary of
Hampstead and Highgate Labour Party from 1995 to 2004 and describes
himself as a "habitual renegade".
Professor Frank Van Dunn is Professor of Philosophy of Law at the
University of Gwent, Belgium. He has published extensively in many
languages on the philosophy of law, logic, political theory, economics,
the history of ideas, and the philosophy of human rights. The
Libertarian Alliance has published his Authoritarian and Libertarian
Views of Society and his essays "Natural Law and the Jurisprudence of
Freedom", "Against Libertarian Legalism", "Human Dignity: Reason or
Desire?", "Natural Rights versus Human Rights", and "Natural Law,
Liberalism and Christianity" have been published in the The Journal of
Libertarian Studies. His important critique of limited liability and the
corporation, "Is the Corporation a Free Market Institution?" was
published in The Freeman (http://www.fee.org/~web/0303iolpdf/feat7.pdf)
and his essay "Philosophical States and the Illusions of Citizenship:
Reflections on the Neutral State" in the book Hayek Revisited.
Dr. Richard Ebeling is President of the Foundation for Economic
Education (http://www.fee.org), the world's pioneer free market think
tank, having formerly held the Ludwig von Mises Professorship in
Economics at Hillsdale College and served as vice president of academic
affairs for The Future of Freedom Foundation. One of the world's leading
authorities in Austrian School economics he is the author of Austrian
Economics and the Political Economy of Freedom and the forthcoming
Monetary Central Planning and the State and Ludwig von Mises: An
Intellectual Biography. He has also edited the lost papers of Ludwig von
Mises in three volumes as Selected Writings of Ludwig von Mises, and as
well as three other volumes of previously unpublished lectures by Von
Mises: Money, Inflation, and the Market Order, Marxism Unmasked: From
Delusion to Destruction, and The Free Market and Its Enemies. He is
also the editor of 21 other volumes, including Economic Theories and
Controversies, Liberty, Security and the War on Terrorism, Free Markets
or Bureaucracy?: Economic Problem-Solving in the 21st Century,

Libertarian Forum, and Libertarian Review. He has lectured extensively
throughout the world and consulted with the government of Lithuania and
with members of the Russian Parliament in Moscow on free market reform
and privatization of the socialist economy. He was in Moscow in August
1991 during the failed coup-attempt and was at the barricades with the
defenders of freedom at the Russian Parliament. With his wife Dr. Anna
Ebeling he uncovered the "lost papers" Ludwig von Mises, looted by the
Nazis, captured by the Soviet Army at the end of the Second World War,
and hidden in a secret archive in Moscow. Dr. Ebeling is this year's
recipient of the Libertarian Alliance/Libertarian International Liberty

Dr. Sean Gabb is Director of Communications of the Libertarian Alliance,

Commentary, as well as being a university lecturer in Britain and
overseas. He has made hundreds of media appearances on behalf of the
Libertarian Alliance and is the author of numerous books and monographs

embarrassing its slimy friends, he was labelled a "terrorist" by the

Dr. Syed Kamall is a Conservative Member of the European Parliament for
London. He is also a Visiting Fellow at Leeds University Business School
where he has lectured MBA students in international business and
strategy and supervised doctoral students' research. He has written a
number of articles on the international strategies of firms and foreign
investment. He is also co-founder of the Global Business Research
Institute (GBRI; http://www.gbri.org/), an educational body conducting
outreach to business executives, journalists and civil servants,
promoting a greater understanding of globalisation and its consequences.
In 1996, Syed completed a book on EU telecommunications policy,
Telecommunications, and has written on multinational business and
telecommunications policy for such books as Management in China: The
Experience of Foreign Businesses, Trade and Investment in China: The
European Experience, Political and Economic Relations Between Asia and
Europe: New Challenges in Economics and Management, and in such journals
as Management International Review and Transnational Corporations.
Sacha Kumaria is Director of Programmes at the Stockholm Network
(http://stockholm-network.org/), a "one-stop shop for organisations
seeking to work with Europe's brightest policymakers and thinkers, with
a unique network of 130 market-oriented think tanks in Europe and
worldwide". He is Editor of the quarterly newsletter Eye on Europe and
author of The State of the Union, a report on market reform within the
European Union.
Christian Michel is the former owner of one of Europe's largest trust
and corporate service companies and is a member of the Board of
Directors of the Libertarian International and of the Committee of the
Libertarian Alliance. He is also the author such books as La Liberte,
Deux ou Trois Choses Que Je Sais D'elle and of many monographs for the
Libertarian Alliance, including Restitution: Justice in a Stateless
Society, The Class Struggle Is Not Over, Capitalism and the Wisdom of
the Elders, and The End of the Warrior. A French national, he currently

Dr. Julian Morris is Director of the International Policy Network (IPN)
(http://www.policynetwork.net), based in London, which "aims to empower
individuals and promote respect for people and property in order to
eliminate poverty, improve human health and protect the environment". He
is also a Visiting Professor at the University of Buckingham. He holds
degrees in economics and law and is the author or editor of many papers
and books, including Environment and Health: Myths and Realities,
Development: Promoting Progress or Perpetuating Poverty and Climate
Change: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom, Ideal Matter: Globalisation
and the Intellectual Property Debate. His articles have also appeared
in a wide range of newspapers and journals, including The Financial
Times, The Sunday Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Australian, The Wall
Street Journal Europe, Economic Times (India), Business Day (South
Africa), Nature, and Toxicology. Prior to founding IPN, he was Director
of the Environment and Technology Programme at the Institute of Economic
Affairs.
Stephen Pollard was recently described by the BBC as "Britain's most
prolific columnist", has been called a "Labour guru" on the front page
of The Sunday Times, and is, according to The Guardian, the man who
showed Tony Blair how to reform the NHS - an accusation for which he
made the paper make a grovelling apology. He is a political columnist
who writes for most British newspapers, and regularly in The Times, The
Sunday Telegraph and The Wall Street Journal Europe. He is a Senior
Fellow at the Centre for the New Europe, where he heads the health
policy programme, and at Civitas: The Institute for the Study of Civil
Society. His biography of the former Home Secretary, David Blunkett, was
published in 2004, and received much press attention. From 1998-2000 he
was a columnist and Chief Leader Writer on The Daily Express; from
1995-98 he was Head of Research at the Social Market Foundation; and
from 1992-95 Research Director at the Fabian Society. He is co-author,
with Andrew Adonis, of the best-selling A Class Act: The Myth of
Britain's Classless Society, and is also the author of numerous
pamphlets and monographs, including The Market and Clause IV, Towards a
More Cooperative Society: Ideas on the Future of the British Labour
Movement and Independent Health Care, A Question of Choice: Public
Priorities for Health Care, Schools, Selection and the Left, and Israel,
