Iraq insists on withdrawal timetable
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 11:50

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Iraq's national security adviser said Tuesday his
country will not accept any security deal with the United States unless
it contains specific dates for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces.

The comments by Mouwaffak al-Rubaie were the strongest yet by an Iraqi
official about the deal now under negotiation with U.S. officials. They
came a day after Iraq's prime minister first said publicly that he
expects the pending troop deal with the United States to have some type
of timetable for withdrawal.

President Bush has said he opposes a timetable. The White House said
Monday it did not believe Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was proposing a
rigid timeline for U.S. troop withdrawals.

The Spying Started Before September 11 -- That's The Whole Point
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 09:28

No, it started a few weeks after Bush took office -- a time when the
Bush administration was ignoring the terrorist threat. So it was about
something else, and was a high enough priority to plan out during the
transition. (Can you say "political spying?")

One telecom company, Qwest, refused because it was flat-out illegal. The
Bush administration punished them, blocked federal contracts, and in an
early indicator of what was to come from the politicized Bush Justice
Department, they prosecuted Qwest's CEO on trumped-up charges.

Study: Military gays don't undermine unit cohesion
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 09:16

Congress should repeal the "don't ask, don't tell" law because the
presence of gays in the military is unlikely to undermine the ability to
fight and win, according to a new study released by a California-based
research center.

To support its contention, the panel points to the British and Israeli
militaries, where it says gay people serve openly without hurting the
effectiveness of combat operations.

TVNL Comment: It is Christian hatred and bigotry that is the main reason
for anti-gay rules and regulations in our nation.

US exports to Iran rose in Bush years
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 09:13

U.S. exports to Iran grew more than tenfold during President Bush's
years in office even as he accused Iran of nuclear ambitions and helping
terrorists. America sent more cigarettes to Iran -- at least $158
million worth under Bush -- than any other products.

Other surprising shipments to Iran during the Bush administration:
brassieres, bull semen, cosmetics, fur clothing, sculptures, perfume,
musical instruments and possibly even weapons.

Panel calls for new war powers legislation
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 09:05

Former secretaries of state James Baker III and Warren Christopher say
the next time the president goes to war, Congress should be required to
say whether it agrees. The co-chairmen of a bipartisan study group have
proposed legislation that would require the president to consult
lawmakers before initiating combat lasting longer than a week, except in
cases of emergencies. In turn, Congress would have to act within 30
days, either approving or disapproving of the action.

TVNL Comment: Did any of these people read the Constitution?

Justice Dept. Sued Over Political Bias
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 08:26

Investigators unveiled a report late last month detailing the litmus
tests used in making selections for the intern and honors program. One
hiring panel member performed Google searches for candidates' ties to
environmental and social justice groups, the report said.

"It appears the politicization at Justice was so pervasive that even
interns had to pass a partisan litmus test," House Judiciary Committee
Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) said last week.

After the Battle, Fighting the Bottle at Home
Tuesday, 08 July 2008 00:00

Mr. Klecker’s case is part of a growing body of evidence that alcohol
abuse is rising among veterans of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, many
of them trying to deaden the repercussions of war and disorientation of
home.

Increasingly, these troubled veterans are spilling into the criminal
justice system.

A U.S. attack on Iraqi bankers puts a damper on talks about the future
status of American forces.
Monday, 07 July 2008 23:25

Like most Iraqis, Mohammad Abood expects the highly secured roads at the
Baghdad airport to be safe. So when someone told him his father's car
had broken down on his way to a job in the terminal, the son calmly went
to assist him.

But a cordon of U.S. troops stopped him from reaching the car. Abood,
21, could only get close enough to see the two-door Opel engulfed in
flames, incinerating 57-year-old Hafd Abood and two women colleagues
from his office in an airport bank.

EPA dropped wetlands cases after high court ruling
Monday, 07 July 2008 22:52

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration didn't pursue hundreds of
potential water pollution cases after a 2006 Supreme Court decision that
restricted the Environmental Protection Agency's authority to regulate
seasonal streams and wetlands.

From July 2006 through December 2007 there were 304 instances where the
EPA found what would have been violations of the Clean Water Act before
the court's ruling, according to a memo by the agency's enforcement chief.
