I normally rent vans from Toyota Rentacar, Nissan Rentacar, or Nippon
Rentacar. I have point / discount cards with all of them and normally
use the one that's closest and has a van when I need it. Mazda has a
rental arm, too, but I haven't used them simply because one of the
others has always been closer and the difference in price was never
enough to make me go the extra couple of km. Use Orix only if you bring
your own condoms and lube. They have more hidden charges and penalties
than even the Japanese tax office.
After you have a rep with one or more of them, the options get more
flexible. For instance, there have been a couple of times when they
didn't have a van handy on short notice, but they had a 4 tonne box
truck (a standard truck with an enclosed box on the back) with a long
ramp or an hydraulic lift gate that they let me have for the same rate
as a van. It worked out really well for one particular two-day
qualifier because it had rained the entire week before and the
campground was half submerged. We just put the bikes outside and set
the tent up in the back of the truck. We had a charcoal grill for
cooking and just set that out on the lift gate and stayed dry.
