I'd say she's familiar with most of what goes on, enough to hold up in
conversation, but in the past few years she's been fairly disconnected
with anything that's not science.

It's probably like the best of Japanese dramas, those once every couple
of years shows that have the girls going crazy over some guy. My guess 
is the girls who go crazy for the Korean heart throb are the same girls 
that went crazy for Kimutaku, etc.
