That has been the claim.

Even those who still live? I have been aware for years that any man I meet in
their late 70s or older, could have been directly involved in the fighting or
atrocities. But strangely enough, any man I have met (and they are damned few,
I can only recall two right now) who admit they did anything at the time claim
they either worked for the Americans during the Occupation, for example, or
that they were still at boot camp and never fought. Any man in my wife's family
still living was simply too young.

Oh, there was the Buddhist priest from a samurai family who taught me kendo and
had fought in the Pacific. I hear he killed Americans.
