Do you mean the disk is recognized as a ``unknown'' type disk by kernel?
Or, kernel recognized no disk device?

As far as I know, NEWS OS can handle any SCSI disk even if it is
not found in-kernel disk type catalog. Unknown type DISK has
minor performance problem because disk cache is disabled.

It may cause trouble. NEWS OS will issue some mode-select SCSI
commands to known disk. Geometry-compatible disk is NOT mode-select
compatible.
