I suspect this is also the case with automobiles. The first thing my mother
asked me when she visited me here in 1999 was, why are all the cars on the roads
less than 5 years old? I answered with the theory that since inspection fees and
taxes run into the thousands of US dollars even if your car's in impeccable
condition, there comes a point where it's simply more cost-effective to just go
out and buy a new car.
I also gave this answer for her question as to why there are SO MANY GOD DAMNED
JUNKYARD EYESORE FUCKLECLUSTERS ALL OVER THE PLACE.
(I'm only going off on this tangent because I finally pay my car off in January,
and immediately have to cough up 110,000 yen for a 車検, which amounts to
permission to drive my own car on the road for 2 more years. Then, of course,
I'm going to buy a new one.)
