As you can tell the use of a plug suit is "optional', but the neuro-transmitters that the pilots wear are used to connect indirectly to the EVA. if they had to connect themselves directly to the EVA they would have to do it "Matrix style", pretty much connecting a wire directly to the brain. The pilots have to be able to be removed from the entry plug quickly, so these neuro transmitters do the job in the series.
