In the case of her boyfriend/husband/brother/whatever, there is a very strong likelihood that *at the time of enlistment* it was explicitly understood by all and sundry that service in the JSDF would not involve deployment outside of Japan and/or its exclusion zone except for training abroad or possibly (if he signed up within the last 10 years) on UN blue helmet duties.
