I can tell you, that this is not forgotten here in Germany. Nearly all 
of my older relatives fought at different places in WWII and some were 
in Africa and Italy and they told enough stories about Gurkhas and 
soldiers from French african colonies (I know, France was not in the 
Commonwealth).
One of the German strategies before WWI was to get colonies at the 
sea-routes from India to Britain, to disturb the troop transports from 
India to Britain in a possible war. Well, it did not work very good...
