It's a term from psychology describing the imaginary barrier people
place around themselves to keep others away, with the most pronounced
ones being present in those with autism. Basically it's the idea that
people who are withdrawn and closed to themselves, tend to repel other
people even if those others aren't aware of this characteristic. Ok, you
know how there might be someone popular in school or at work, and when
they appear almost everywhere goes to them to talk or even just be
closer? An AT Field is the opposite of that.

Come to think of it.. this makes sense. The "Anti-AT Field" mentioned in
End of Evangelion WOULD be just that.. it would attract others as
opposed to repelling them, and that would be how you'd get everyone
together..

The anime takes the idea that Angels and Evas are so powerful their AT
Fields can be physically manifested, and in the case of the REALLY
strong Angels, it's also visible to the naked eye.
