I've heard that sometimes, when two companies are thinking of merging, the
respective families of each may decide that a union of the families will be
a stronger bond. But the young couple will only be married on paper. And
that after some length of time, the couple will separate quietly.
Don't know if this view is valid and / or current (if ever). But could this
be a reason for Mr. Smith's couple in question?
Or am I reading too much into Japanese movies...
