From my experience -- pretty freaking hard. Especially if you're a gaijin
and don't have any freebies like tissues to help pitch your ads.

When I was an exchange student, I had a side job teaching English at one of
those little rinky-dink eikaiwa's. When no teachers had any students
scheduled for a given hour, we had to all go down near the station and hand
out fliers (kind of collective punishment and a big hint from
management...). We had a quota (something like 100) that we had to hand out
in an hour. The other teachers (all young, pretty women) would hand out
their 100 fliers in about 15 minutes, come back to my corner, split up the
fliers I had left (around 95), and go hand them out. We would repeat the
process until all the fliers were handed out. About 10 of them by me.

They did pay us -- something like 1,000 yen -- but believe me, that was a
thousand yen I would very gladly have passed up.
