See, the thing is for me that I don't already have the "Perfect Collection"
set. Had I that one already, I would probably try to sell it before getting
the Platinum Edition, but I don't. I think ADV has done a much better job
with the Platinums than with the original discs, and visually it's an
incredible experience.

Is it for suckers? I don't know. It's not going to change the fundamental
plot of the series, but I'm talking to Evangelion's most hardcore *fans*
here on J.A.E. It is doubtless the best Evangelion experience available to
English-speaking, Region 1 fans, and it makes little sense to buy the old
"Perfect Collection" today just to save a few bucks. "Upgrading," however,
really depends largely on how much money you have available.

Also, there's commentary tracks which were not present on the original
releases, if you like those.

It's also possible to think of the purchase as a donation to ADV to try and
help finance the new live action movie ^^.

As a side note, I'm also not all that concerned about DVD being outmoded in
a few years by some HD format when I buy TV shows, as there's really only a
certain maximal resolution that you're going to get out of something
originally made for standard analog broadcast TV anyway, and upgrading to
HD won't make much of a difference. Movies, on the other hand, lose a lot
of data when converted to the DVD format, and I've tended to avoid buying
as many of them.
