I don't know about that. Judo itself was certainly much stronger -- it has
been declining in Japan for some time -- and so judo players as a whole were
better and more well rounded.

True, but not really a reason for it to be popular with older players. In
fact, IME the opposite is true: judoka get "bigger" with age.
