What pains me about waiters in Japan is their almost total inability to
'sell' any of the items on the menu. I'm not talking about any: "Good
evening sir. I'm Ramone. And I'll be your waiter for this evening" type of
behavior - just the simple: "This is a new item, this is on special today,
this with coffee and dessert is only 400 yen extra".
I've only ever once been asked if I'd actually like a drink with my meal.
Let alone 'another' drink. And the one place that did ask was my first
regular eating joint when I arrived here all those years ago. It was a
hamburger-steak establishment, I'd turn up after classes at about 9.30 and
the 'master' would always gesture towards the nama-beer tap - he'd get an
affirmative nod half the time. Beer for me - money for him. Why don't bar
and restaurant staff sell their product? It sure isn't some crap that a few
students tried to pass off on me about Japanese customers not wanting to be
pestered. If that was truly the case then the guy at my local Honda
dealership would have to be drip-fed valium.
BTW talking of sales pitches - anyone else been pestered by Yahoo BB over
the last few weeks? It hasn't started to really irritate yet 'coz the
moment you mention B-Flets they just shut-up and bid you good-day (pardon
the oxymoron).
