Sounds like the blaster worm.  I supposedly rid a friend's computer of it
last Sunday but still couldn't access Windoze Update (using XPee).  I just
did a total re-partition and re-install (it was a 'naked' computer
fortunately) - probably took less total time than trying to figure out what
was wrong.

Routers are sooo cheap these days - my Linksys cost just 6000 yen and of
course I can use the US homepage to get all the help (with screenshots) I
could every imagine needing.  Frankly, I consider the router my most
important piece of PC equipment - it's a condom for your computer.  Not
guaranteed to work all the time - but unless you make little holes in it -
like opening up dozens of ports - you're going to be safe enough.
