1. Releases and Basic Information
==============================
1.1 What is Neon Genesis Evangelion?
--------------------------------
Neon Genesis Evangelion is an anime series by Studio Gainax which
follows the progress of a group of children chosen to pilot
mankind's defence against the threat from the Angels. They are
part of an organisation called NERV which is ostensibly dedicated
to the defeat of these Angels. As the plot thickens it becomes
apparent that that is not all that NERV has in mind. There are
obviously two agendas in operation that of NERV and Gendou Ikari
and that of his supposed superiors the moguls of the SEELE
organisation. The plot revolves around the machinations of these
two organisations and their reactions to the angel attacks
through their joint tools the Evangelion Units 00, 01 and 02.
There are 26 TV episodes and three theatrical movies (Evangelion:
Death & Rebirth, The End Of Evangelion And Revival Of
Evangelion).
There are not going to be new episodes - rumours saying that
there will be are unconfirmed and probably misinformed.
1.2. NGE Releases
============
For information on upcoming releases you can check the Manga new
relases page <http://www.manga.com/newmanga/>.
1.2.1 How many episodes make up the series?
-------------------------------------
There are 26 TV episodes
1.2.2 What are the redone episodes?
-----------------------------
The redone episodes are different versions of episodes 21-24 that
were done for the Japanese video market. They add around 15
minutes of extra footage across the 4 episodes that help explain
the series more fully and also retouch various scenes. They are
available on LD, VHS and DVD in Japan but unavailable in other
parts of the world. Some stills of the extra scenes are shown on
the EvaOtaku director's cut
<http://www.evaotaku.com/director_cut/> page.
Please note that these are *NOT* deleted scenes removed by ADV or
GAINAX or anyone involved with transferring Evangelion to the
English-speaking market.
1.2.3 A brief rundown of Evangelion releases in Japan
-----------------------------------------------
In an attempt to clear up confusion, here is a rundown of the
history of Eva releases in Japan (Text by Olivier Hague)
"* The 26 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion were first aired in
Japan in 1995-1996. A few changes had to be made at that time,
like removing actual brand names or "sexual content" (feminine
underwear, Ritsuko naked before Seele,...) Gainax also wanted to
have 30-second reviews, but had to shorten them to 15-second
ones.
* A "making-of" video cassette named "Neon Genesis Evangelion
Genesis 0:0 In the Beginning" was released.
* The Japanese videos of the series were then released one after
another. Each video/LD contained 2 episodes and was named "Neon
Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:01, 0:02, etc...". These videos
featured the episodes the way they were supposed to be in the
first place (30-second previews, actual brand names, and so
on...). But Anno decided to slightly improve episodes 21 to 24 (
and adding new scenes as well ) and to remake entirely episodes
25 and 26 ( he "owed" this to his staff, since he monopolized the
two last TV episodes, even if he had no choice, due to money and
time matters ) for this video release. So the video release came
to a stop with "Genesis 0:10" ( episodes 19 and 20 ), because
they had to work on that video release, but also on... the
movies.
* A few weeks after the end of the series, it was decided that
two movies would be made for spring and summer of 1997. Gainax
said that the first one would be a sum-up of the series, and that
the second one would be an "original story".
* I think that AD vision bought the series around this period of
time... They released episodes 1 to 20 in their "video version",
but they didn't want to wait until the completion of the
"renewal" of episodes 21 to 24 by Gainax. So, they released the
"tv version" of episodes 21 to 26.
* Gainax eventually decided that the first movie, called
"Evangelion : Death and Rebirth", would consist of two parts. The
first one, "Evangelion : Death", directed by Masayuki, being the
sum-up mentioned earlier, with the addition of a few extra
scenes, some of them being excerpts of the yet-to-come redone
episodes 21 and 22 (a treat for the fans). The second one,
"Evangelion : Rebirth", would be the new episodes 25 and 26, the
other ending that was first planned for a video release.
* Another video cassettes of "making-of", named "Neon Genesis
Evangelion Genesis 0:0' The Light From the Darkness" and about
the movie this time, were given to those who "pre-ordered" their
theatre tickets.
* Because of schedule problems (again ^^; ), Gainax then
announced that "Evangelion : Rebirth" would only be the
_beginning_ of the new ending. So, they decided that the second
movie would actually be the _completed_ new ending, tentatively
named "Evangelion : Rebirth II". (as a matter of fact, it looks
like they had absolutely _no idea_ what to do with this second
movie, in the beginning... so they were probably glad they could
forget about this "original story" thing ^_^;)
* The second movie was finally called "The End of Evangelion" and
consisted of two parts, the two new episodes 25 and 26 (episodes
25' and 26'). The first one, "Air", was a slightly improved
version of "Evangelion : Rebirth", completed with about 15
minutes of additional footage ("Evangelion : Rebirth" ended just
before the battle between Asuka and the Eva series). The second
one, "Magokoro o, Kimi ni", was entirely new.
* In January 1998, a director's cut of "Evangelion : Death and
Rebirth", called "Evangelion : Death (True) and Rebirth", was
aired on Japanese TV. It looks like Masayuki didn't really want
to include all these excerpts of the new scenes for episodes 21
and 22. It really was a treat for the fans in the first place. So
he removed some of them for this new version of "Evangelion :
Death".
* In March 1998, a third movie was released in the Japanese
theaters. "Revival of Evangelion" consisted of three parts. The
first one was "Evangelion : Death (True)^2", an improved version
of the director's cut of "Evangelion : Death" aired on TV two
months earlier (I think the changes had to do with the music or
the sound mix, this time?). The second of third parts were "Air"
and "Magokoro o, Kimi ni". In a way, that means that this
"Revival of Evangelion" movie is what "Evangelion : Death and
Rebirth" should have been in the first place...
* "Genesis 0:11" and "Genesis 0:12" were then finally released in
Japan. They contained the redone episodes 21 to 24, improved,
with added scenes, their 30-second previews, etc... Episode 24
featured its "classical" 15-second preview for the original TV
episode 25, and also a new 30-second preview for episode 25',
"Air".
* "Genesis 0:13", released a few months later, featured episode
25 and episode 25'. This "video version" of Episode 25' was
slightly different from its theatrical counterpart, like I said
in another post. The "The End of Evangelion" title was replaced
by a "Neon Genesis Evangelion" one to blend this new episode in
the series, the credits were different, and there was a preview
for episode 26', "Magokoro o, Kimi ni".
* "Genesis 0:14" was finally released, and featured episode 26
and episode 26'. Like for episode 25', episode 26' was slightly
modified in its "video version".
* In December 1998, video and LD boxes were released. They
contained "Evangelion: Death (True)^2 and Rebirth" (do I have to
explain? ^^ ) and "The End of Evangelion" (ie episodes 25' and
26' in their "theatrical version").
* Evangelion was released on DVDs as well. There are 7 volumes,
and each of them contains 4 episodes (the last one as well:
episodes 25, 26, 25' and 26'). There's also a 2-DVD box for the
movies. Same contents as the video and LD boxes."
1.2.4 A Note on Japanese Eva releases
-------------------------------
There are several things that crop up regarding Japanese
releases:
DVDs - the entire series & movies are available across 7 DVDs -
DVDs 1-6 contain episodes 1-24 (4 per disc) and disc 7 contains
episodes 25-26 and episodes 25' and 26' There is also a special
movie DVD that contains "Evangelion : Death (True)^2 and Rebirth,
and the End of Evangelion"
Genesis 0:14 - "Neon Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:13" contains
episodes 25 and 25'. "Neon Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:14"
contains episodes 26 and 26'.
Genesis 0:0 - "Neon Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:0 In the
Beginning", this is a "making of" video for the series.
"Neon Genesis Evangelion Genesis 0:0' The Light From the
Darkness", this is a "making of" video for Death:Rebirth.
1.2.5 What are the differences between the Theatrical and Video
movies?
-------------------------------------------------------------
The video release and theatrical release of End of Evangelion are
slightly different as summarised below (Text by Olivier Hague)
Theatrical version:
* Eye catch: "The End of Evangelion Episode:25' Love is
destructive."
* Credits for both episodes 25' and 26' (ie the whole movie) show
up between the episodes (song: Thanatos - If I Can't Be Yours -)
* No preview.
* Title screen: "The End of Evangelion"
* Asuka says "... Iya." in the kitchen scene.
* Eye catch: "The End of Evangelion One More Final: I need you."
* Caption: "End of the movie"
* No end credits.
Video version:
* Eye catch: "Neon Genesis Evangelion Episode:25' Love is
destructive."
* Credits for episode 25' show up between the episodes (song:
Thanatos - If I Can't Be Yours - (Short Version))
* Preview
* Title screen: "Neon Genesis Evangelion"
* We don't hear Asuka's "... Iya.". It's written on the screen.
* Eye catch: "Neon Genesis Evangelion One More Final: I need
you."
* Caption: "End"
* Credits for episode 26' (music: Jesus bleibet meine Freude)
1.2.6 How was the series planned out?
-------------------------------
They didn't write the scenario of an episode before the previous
one was "finished", so they didn't really know what episode 25
would be like until episode 24 was completed... After that, they
had some ideas for episode 25, with JSSDF attacking Nerv, Misato
and Ritsuko dying, Asuka being hidden with her Eva-02, and so
on... But they just couldn't make this episode, because they
didn't have enough time (and money?) for that... So, Anno decided
to change all that, and made those "strange" episodes 25 and 26
(you can still see some stills reminiscent of what episode 25 was
first supposed to be).
Anno was satisfied with this ending, but some of his Gainax
friends weren't (and TV viewers as well, but Anno didn't really
care about them), so he told them that the first-planned episode
25 will be made for the video release, and that there would be a
new episode 26 as well after that. Eventually, these episodes
became a movie.
Info supplied by Olivier Hague
1.2.7 What's with the overlays?
-------------------------
On the first DVD volume, ADV used a large number of overlays to
translate signs and other on screen Japanese characters. On the
earlier VHS releases and later DVD volumes they used subtitles to
explain the Japanese text. The overlays are very crisp and stand
out against the softer and grainy original video, especially when
the video shakes slight behind the perfectly still overlays. For
further information see Animeprime's Evangelion Editing Report
<http://www.animeprime.com/reports/eva.shtml>.
1.3. Availability of the Series
==========================
1.3.1 Availability of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series
-----------------------------------------------------
The Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series (Eva for short) is now
available in many different countries. What follows is a list of
countries in which Eva is available, along with distributor
information:
UNITED STATES: Available in sub & dub, on 13 NTSC VHS tapes from:
ADV FILMS Website: ADV Films <http://www.advfilms.com/>
UNITED KINGDOM: Available in dub only, on 13 PAL VHS tapes from:
AD VISION UK Website: ADV Films UK
<http://www.advfilms.com/advuk/>
AUSTRALIA: MADMAN ENTERTAINMENT Website: Madman Entertainment
<http://www.madman.com.au/>
For anywhere around the world you can try Express.com
<http://www.express.com>
Or for those in the UK : Blackstar <http://www.blackstar.co.uk/>
which is good for the whole series as long as you don't want DVD
there being very little released on region 2 DVD format for the
UK market as yet.
1.3.2 Where can I download full episodes of NGE?
------------------------------------------
Asking for links or FTP sites to download the Evangelion series
is severely frowned upon, and should not be asked in the
newsgroup. This is for the simple fact that Evangelion is
available in most all countries or via Internet stores, and also
because most fans of Evangelion realise how good the series is,
and respect that the creators of the series should be given the
money they deserve.
1.3.3 Where can I buy videos of the TV Series?
----------------------------------------
This comes up often. If the series has had an official release in
your country, your best bet is to try a video shop. You may have
more luck trying a specialist science fiction shop - a majority
have been to stock some anime, and since Eva is one of the
best-selling anime series to be released outside of Japan, there
is a high chance they'll stock them. If they do not appear to
stock them, the store may be able to order them for if you ask.
Other than that, there are various on-line retailers you can try.
I've decided to list them under country, since some retailers
would be useless in certain parts of the world (due to the
NTSC/PAL/SECAM differences).
For the United States / Canada:
Anime Nation <http://www.animenation.com/>
Right Stuf <http://www.rightstuf.com/>
Amazon <http://www.amazon.com/>
AnimeCastle <http://www.animecastle.com/>
[Note: Many rental chains within the US & Canada carry rental
copies of the VHS version. Known stores are Blockbuster Video and
Hollywood Video]
For the United Kingdom a good place to try, if you don't have a
card and can't use the various internet sources, is Forbidden
Planet. They had them in stock and can order them should they be
out of stock. The London branch is just awesome. As of yet they
have a poor internet presence but we can only hope that they will
improve that in the future. Check out the old FAQ links
<http://www.evafaq.com/links.htm> page for contacts.
Blackstar <http://www.blackstar.co.uk/>
Otaku.co.uk <http://www.otaku.co.uk/>
MVM-UK <http://www.mvm-uk.co.uk/>
Amazon UK <http://www.amazon.co.uk/>
For Australia: Madman Entertainment <http://www.madman.com.au/>
1.3.4 Availability of the Neon Genesis Evangelion movies
--------------------------------------------------
Currently the three movies are unavailable in any western
languages (but they are available on videotape, LaserDisc and
Region 2 DVD in Japan), although in July 1999 at the Anime Expo
convention in California it was announced that Manga
Entertainment has acquired the rights to all three movies, which
will all likely get simultaneous VHS and DVD releases. Manga
however have yet to finalise their contract with GAINAX and have
therefore yet to receive all the material for the movies from
them. However after this is accomplished, Manga still have to
reunite the original voice actors and record for the movie, so
don't expect the movie anytime soon.
Manga were also discussing releasing the movie theatrically, but
have since canned this due to the fact that you have to have seen
the series to truly understand the movie.
Releases to other nations where Manga Entertainment has branches
will most likely follow.
1.3.5 Where can I download the movies?
--------------------------------
One of the regulars on JAE, Tessai, runs an FTP server from his
computer, were he has The End of Evangelion available for
download. See "The FTP" section of this FAQ for details.
1.3.6 Is Evangelion coming out on DVD?
--------------------------------
If you live in a Region 2 DVD zone (Europe and Japan mainly) and
can speak Japanese, you're in luck because the entire series and
all the movies are available in Japan on DVD already.
However, if you're not, you're not quite so lucky. ADV Films are
starting to release the TV series on multi-lingual DVDs (English,
Japanese, French and Spanish dub tracks and at least English
subtitles) in the Region 1 and 4 zones.
The movies will also come out on DVD, as mentioned above, and
will also be English dub & sub. They will (presumably) be
released on DVD in all territories where Manga Entertainment are
committed to releasing DVDs.
As for the TV series DVDs, as it currently stands, there is
probably little chance of them getting released outside the US in
the foreseeable future. ADV has made little inroad into the US
DVD market since they started releasing DVDs in January 1999, and
have shown little interest in releasing DVDs in other nations.
Your best bet (if you live outside the US) in this case is to get
a multi-region player and to buy the US releases.
1.3.7 Where can I buy the DVDs?
-------------------------
For Japanese ones try:
Gainax <http://www.gainax.co.jp/>
CD Online Station CDJapan <http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/>
The English discs are available for preordering on:
DVD Express <http://www.dvdexpress.com/>
AnimeNation <http://www.animenation.com/>
Right Stuf <http://www.rightstuf.com/>
1.3.8 Where can I buy Evangelion Music CDs?
-------------------------------------
There are many different Evangelion music CDs available. If you
are interested in purchasing them, you could try some of the
following mail-order companies. They should be able to supply you
with a list (or there may be one on their website): - Otaku
Publishing - Camegave - CD Japan You may also be able to find
them in the import soundtracks section of large record stores or
science fiction stores.
The CDs available are:
Original Soundtrack Vol. 1,
Original Soundtrack Vol. 2,
Original Soundtrack Vol. 3,
Evangelion Vox,

7 CDs worth of music. Whatever you are looking for is probably
here.
1.3.10 Where can I download Evangelion music/MP3s?
-------------------------------------------
A great site "Symphony of Evangelion" used to have all the albums
(bar the S2 works) up for download in MP3 format, however, GAINAX
has been clamping down on the usage of images and Evangelion
files, and so this site, and the sister site Reflections of Eva
has been closed down. The site Evacorp has the MP3s from
different albums, however don't expect them to be up for long
with GAINAX out on the prowl.
1.3.11 Evangelion on Video CD
----------------------
Evangelion is available on Video CD in Singapore in one large
13-CD box set. After seeing one of these Video CDs, two things
are apparent:
1) The quality is poor if played through a PC ( DVD quality
unknown )
2) They are a legitimate release and are not pirates. However, if
you are interested in them they can be obtained from this URL:
http://members.xoom.com/ad_naseum/
<http://members.xoom.com/ad_naseum/>
1.4. NGE Manga
=========
1.4.1 What is the Evangelion manga? Where can I get it?
-------------------------------------------------
The Evangelion manga is the comic-book form of Evangelion. It is
drawn and scripted by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, a co-founder of Studio
GAINAX, who also worked on the character designs for the TV
series & movies.
Rather than being a direct version of the TV series, Sadamoto has
done an "interpretation" of the TV series, where events can be
quite different. Because of this, it has not been popular with
all the fans of the TV series.
Currently there are 6 books of the manga completed. English
versions are being published by Viz Communications.
Graphic novels of the first four books are also available (RRP
US$15.95, $23.95 CAN). You can probably buy the graphic novels at
most bookstores in the US; for the monthly issue you're more
likely to find in a comic store. If you live outside the US,
could try getting a local comic/science fiction store to order
them for you, or you could order them online at many of the
online stores listed on the old FAQ's links
<http://www.evafaq.com/Links.htm> page. (Viz's official store
also offers subscriptions for the monthly issues and back issues
as well online)
1.4.2 What's different about the Collector's Editions of the
manga?
-------------------------------------------------------------
Viz have made two versions of the Eva manga available - the
normal version and a "Collector's Edition". There is absolutely
no difference between the content of both editions - the
difference is that the Collector's Edition is unflipped. What
does this mean? Books in Japan are read from right to left, and
because of this, when manga is adapted for the English-speaking
market, the artwork is flipped so that it would read from left to
right. The Collector's Edition is simply a translated, unflipped
edition, so technically it looks like a backwards version of the
normal edition. Collector's Editions are available for both the
monthly formats and the collected graphic novels.
1.4.3 What's this I hear about an 14 month delay in publishing the
manga?
-------------------------------------------------------------
There was a long delay in the publishing of Book 5 of the manga
in Japan. This is because Sadamoto took a long break (around 14
months in total). This will not affect the Viz's English-language
publishing schedule in such a drastic way. Because they started
publishing the English version many months after the Japanese
version started, the delay has been cut down from 14 months to
around 4-5. The last issue of book 4 was published in November
(followed by the graphic novel) and the first issue of book 5 is
due in the first quarter of 1999.
1.5. NGE Merchandise
===============
1.5.1 Evangelion merchandise? What is this?
-------------------------------------
Evangelion is hugely popular in Japan, and as such, there is a
lot of Eva-related merchandise out there, ranging from CDs to
action figures to posters. Very little has been released
officially in the West. The old FAQ site had a Merchandise
<http://www.evafaq.com/merchandise.htm> info page.
1.5.2 Where can I buy Evangelion merchandise?
---------------------------------------
This is too large a single section to include here so check the
link page <http://www.evafaq.com/Links.htm> on the old FAQ site.
It includes a lot of DVD, video and retail stores and it will
expand as the group gets its collective finger out and supplies
Scratchbuilt with the info.
1.6. NGE Computer Games
==================
1.6.1 Iron Maiden (Koutetsu no Girlfriend)
------------------------------------
Iron Maiden is the offical English name of "Koutetsu no
Girlfriend". It is available on PlayStation, Sega Saturn and PC,
but always in Japanese. Although Iron Maiden is an adventure-game
it could be called an interactive movie. The Player spends most
of the time watching, just getting a few chances to actually take
part in the plot. In such cases the player can
look/talk/think/move, but eventually the actions barely change
the outcome of the plot. (Exception is the end, where the
player's choice decides on one of the three possible endings).
The story of Iron Maiden is an independent side plot to the
TV-series and takes place at times where Touji has not yet become
an EVA-Pilot but Asuka is already in Tokyo-3 for quite a time.
All characters from the original series have their place in the
story, although some of them (like Rei) are barely significant.
[Excerpt from the TapAnime Eva web page
<http://www.tapanime.com/series/eva/evamisc.html>.]
The GameFAQs website has a review of the PlayStation version
<http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/review/R15761.html>.
1.6.2 Girlfriend of Steel
-------------------
Girlfriend of Steel is sometimes used to refer to the game Iron
Maiden. It is the direct translation of the Japanese title
"Koutetsu no Girlfriend", where Iron Maiden is the official
English title.
2. Information Regarding JAE and Netiquette
========================================
2.1. The Basics of JAE and Usenet
============================
2.1.1 What is JAE?
------------
JAE is the abbreviated name of the "Japan.Anime.Evangelion"
newsgroup. This is the FAQ for this newsgroup.
2.1.2 What is Usenet?
---------------
"Before the Web and web browsers, and before email became
ubiquitous, online communication meant posting text messages on
electronic bulletin boards where others could read and reply to
them. Usenet began as a collection of these bulletin boards (now
called discussion forums or newsgroups) started in 1979 by Steve
Bellovin, Jim Ellis, Tom Truscott, and Steve Daniel at Duke
University. Over the years, the number of such newsgroups has
grown to the thousands, hosted all over the world and covering
every conceivable topic about which humans converse." (Quoted
from Google's Usenet Basics page
<http://groups.google.com/googlegroups/basics.html>)
2.1.3 How can I read/post to JAE?
---------------------------
If you have a news-reader program installed then you can point it
at the group "japan.anime.evangelion". Some web browsers will
accept this link <news:japan.anime.evangelion>.
If you do not have a news-reader program you can download one
from your favourite internet file archive (eg. Tucows). Otherwise
you can use Google's usenet service.
There are also other sub-groups to JAE. These lower volume groups
are "japan.anime.evangelion.asuka" and
"japan.anime.evangelion.ayanami". The group
"japan.anime.evangelion.nerv" is also available on some
news-servers but not all.
2.2. Netiquette and JAE House Rules
==============================
2.2.1 What is netiquette?
-------------------
"Netiquette [from "network etiquette"] noun. The conventions of
politeness recognised in discussion forums, such as avoidance of
cross-posting to inappropriate forums and refraining from
commercial pluggery outside the business forums." (Quoted from
Google's glossary page
<http://groups.google.com/googlegroups/glossary.html>)
For more information about general Netiquette you can try looking
at About.com's Netiquette links
<http://usenet.about.com/cs/netiquette/>.
2.2.2 What is top/bottom posting?
---------------------------
When you reply to a news group posting you have a couple of
options for where to write your response. When you write your
response above the quoted text, then you are top posting. When
you write your response below the quoted text, then your are
bottom posting. Please make sure that you do include some of the
message you are replying to, so others reader can follow the
discussion.
There is a general preference for bottom posting as this is
somewhat easier to follow in multi-message threads. Please try to
bottom post, unless you have a very good reason not to.
2.2.3 Can I post in HTML?
-------------------
*No!* There is no good reason to post in HTML. not everyone can
read HTML formatted messages so they should not be used.
2.2.4 Can I post my new fanfic to JAE?
--------------------------------
Please don't. If you have a new fanfic you want people to see it
is best to upload it to a webpage and then post a link to it
there. There is also a newsgroup "rec.arts.anime.creative" which
is where new fanfics should posted.
2.2.5 Can I post my new fanart to JAE?
--------------------------------
Please don't. If you have a new picture you want people to see it
is best to upload it to a webpage and then post a link to it
there. There is also a newsgroup "rec.arts.anime.creative" which
allows fanart to be posted.
2.2.6 Why are people posting in French/German/Japanese/Gibberish?
-----------------------------------------------------------
The usual answer to this is "Why are you posting in English to a
Japanese newsgroup?" The originally Japanese newsgroup has been
taken over by fans from all over the world. English is written
predominantly, but threads will be written in other languages
when approriate.
2.2.7 How can I set Outlook Express not to break the rules by
default?
-------------------------------------------------------------
The first thing is to set Outlook Express to send plain text by
default. This should stop it from sending HTML formatted messages
without you knowing.
The next thing is bottom posting. Outlook Express puts the cursor
at the start of the message. You should move your cursor to the
end of the message before you enter your reply.
Another item related to bottom posting is putting your signature
at the bottom of your reply. Outlook Express puts the signature
at the top of the message. One way around this is not to
automatically add the signature, put place the "signature" button
on the tool bar. Then at the end of the message you can quickly
add your signature.
2.2.8 What's this "Google" people keep telling me to use?
---------------------------------------------------
Google <http://www.google.com> is a search engine which can be
used to search archived Usenet posts.
(Quoted from Google Groups Help
<http://groups.google.com/googlegroups/help.html>) "Google Groups
contains the entire archive of Usenet discussion groups dating
back to 1995. These discussions cover the full range of human
discourse and provide a fascinating look at evolving viewpoints,
debate and advice on every subject from politics to technology.
Google's search feature enables users to access this wealth of
information with the speed and efficiency of a Google web search,
providing relevant results from a database containing more than
600 million posts."
2.2.9 Which spelling of Gendo, Gendou, Gend$(D??(B, Gendoh is correct?
----------------------------------------------------------
Commander Ikari's first name should have a long "o". So Gendou,
Gend$(D??(B and Gendoh are correct.
Gendo is not strictly correct, but is used by many people who
find it shorter. No one really uses Gendoh.
2.3 The FTP
-------
Tessai's FTP server has a number of Evangelion videos on it,
including a sub of the "End of Evangelion" movie.
The FTP address is: tessai.kicks-ass.net
The username is: "evalow" (for 6k max) or "evahigh" (for 12k
max). Please make sure that you use the correct one for your
connection. *If you abuse this service you and probably your ISP
will be banned!*
The password is: "movie"
2.4 A note on occidental NGE web sites
----------------------------------
There are many of Evangelion related web sites out on the
Internet. Many of these pages just repeat information previously
found on other sites. The problem is there is quite a lot of
misleading, or downright wrong, information being copied around.
Just remember: _"Don't believe anything you read. Except this."_
3. Specific Questions Regarding the Series
=======================================
This FAQ was originally not going to include a section for series
specific questions, however with the amount of similar questions
being asked time and time again, it seems sensible to include a
section. Beware, this section does include spoilers! If I include
"Like with a lot of things in NGE, this is up to
interpretation.", it means there is no one theory that explains
the situation, and it is usually best to make up your own mind.
3.1. Common Misconceptions
=====================
3.1.1 Who Killed Kaji?
----------------
A mystery indeed. The very simple answer is that we don't know
the character that killed Kaji (we NEVER see them in the series
or movies). It was most likely a member of NERV, SEELE or the
JSSDF. This mystery is never resolved (and probably never will
be). GAINAX officially announced that it was a "third person"
from SEELE or one of the intelligence division from NERV.
3.1.2 What does LCL/N^2 does for?
---------------------------
It is not believed that an official source has ever made it clear
what these acronyms stand for.
Quite a few resources (semi-official as well as fan based) say
that they stand for "Link Connect Liquid" and "Non-Nuclear".
These titles have appeared in ADV's translated manga, but since
the original (Japanese) manga never included this it is believed
to be as reliable as ADV's liner notes. Which is not very.
3.1.3 Did Touji lose an arm when Unit 03 was destroyed?
-------------------------------------------------
When we see Touji in the hospital when Hikari is there, we can
see that he has clearly lost a leg, and his left arm is not in
view. This does not mean he lost the arm. We can see both of his
arms intact when he is being pulled from the entry plug, and in
the storyboards for the EoE movie he is shown playing basketball
in a wheelchair, with two arms. So contrary to popular belief,
*HE DID NOT LOSE AN ARM*. Never ever say this on the group. Both
of Touji's arms survived and any arguments otherwise are futile.
3.1.4 What was the First Impact?
--------------------------
The first impact was a meteor collision with earth 4 billion
years ago that dislodged the moon from the earth (so essentially
created the moon). It is NOT the meteor that impacted with the
earth and wiped out the dinosaurs (there were no dinosaurs 4
billion years ago), and it is NOT the biblical flood that centres
around Noah. We know it is a meteor that created the moon because
in episode 7 it is written in a document that is shown.
3.1.5 What's all this I hear about the "Barons of Hell"?
--------------------------------------------------
At least one Eva site
<http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/schung/epiguide.html> says
that the actual designs of various EVA robots parallel medieval
Christianity's description of the various "Barons of Hell". One
Baron of Hell was said to have a featureless face except for a
single large eye (EVA-00). The Baron of Darkness was described as
having a large singular horn and numerous great gnashing teeth
(EVA-01). Another Baron of Hell was described as blood red and a
face with four eyes and two mouths (EVA-02). The fourth Baron of
Hell was said to be black as pitch and had unnaturally long arms
(EVA-03).
But, no member of the group has ever found conculsive proof of
these Barons' descriptions. The only places we have found the
description of these Barons of Hell is on other Evangleion sites.
It does not appear to exist in religious texts. So these Barons
appear to be some fan's creation. It may have started from this
post from Gannon
<http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=pt&selm=350586E2.32C5%40earth
link.net> on March the 10th, 1998.
3.1.6 What is the Giant in Terminal Dogma?
------------------------------------
In the basement of NERV, there is a giant nailed to a red cross
which we first see when Kaji shows Misato. At this point it is
referred to as Adam. However, we have already been introduced to
Adam as the embryo that Kaji smuggled from Germany (episode 8).
The Giant on the cross is Lilith, the small embryo is Adam.
3.1.7 What is the Giant of Light seen during Second Impact?
-----------------------------------------------------
During second impact a giant being of light is seen. This is Adam
(The first Angel) before he (it?) was reduced to an embryo.
3.1.8 Who's soul is in Unit 00?
-------------------------
It is unknown.
3.1.9 The Children were conceived during Second Impact
------------------------------------------------
Their birth dates have _absolutely no relevance_.
Ikari Shinji is born on the 6th of June. He's dubbed by Ogata
Megumi. Ogata Megumi is born on the 6th of June.
Katsuragi Misato: December, 8th - Mitsuishi Kotono: December, 8th
Akagi Ritsuko: November, 21th - Yamaguchi Yuriko: November, 21th
Souryuu Asuka Langley: December, 4th - Miyamura Yuuko: December,
4th
Ikari Gendou: April, 29th - Tachiki Fumihiko: April, 29th
Fuyutsuki Kouzou: April, 9th - Kiyokawa Motomu: April, 9th
Kaji Ryouji: June, 17th - Yamadera Kouichi: June, 17th
Horaki Hikari: February, 18th - Iwao Junko: February, 18th
Hyuuga Makoto: February, 13th - Yuuki Hiro: February, 13th
Ibuki Maya: July, 11th - Nagasawa Miki: July, 11th
Aoba Shigeru: May, 5th - Koyasu Takehito: May, 5th
Ikari Yui: March, 30th, 1977 - Hayashibara Megumi: March, 30th
The only exceptions are:
Nagisa Kaoru: September, 13th - Ishida Akira: November, 2nd -
It's just logical, since he's said to be born on the day of
Second Impact. And by the way, this date is just a reference to
"Space : 1999", nothing else...
Suzuhara Touji: December, 26th - Seki Tomokazu: September, 8th
Aida Kensuke: September, 12th - Iwanaga Testsuya: June, 24th
I don't know why these two were changed, by it's not for the sake
of the "Children conceived before/during/after Second Impact"
theories, because:
Since they're in 2nd year, that means Shinji, Asuka, Touji,
Kensuke and Hikari were 13 on April the 1st, 2015. So, they were
born in this order:
Shinji (July 6, 2001), Kensuke (September 12, 2001), Asuka
(December 4, 2001), Touji (December 26, 2001), Hikari (February
18, 2002)
Having Touji born on the 8th of September, 2001 and Kensuke on
the 24th of July, 2001 wouldn't have change _anything_ about them
being conceived after Second Impact.
So I guess these birth dates are references to something else...
Maybe they're the birth dates of the "Suzuhara Touji" and "Aida
Kensuke" characters from Murakami Ryuu's novel, "Ai to Gensou no
Fascism", for example?
Anyway, like I said, there's _nothing_ to back up these theories.
Eva pilots are probably selected because of their age, and that's
all...
(Text by Olivier Hague)
3.1.10 Is Kiel Lorentz the Wandering Jew?
----------------------------------
The wandering Jew is a story about a man who has been cursed by
God to walk the earth forever. There is no evidence that Kiel is
the wandering Jew.
It is believed that this rumour emerged from "Gendo Ikari's
ultimate Eva FAQ" which many describe as "appallingly
inaccurate". Even in there it is written that "While it is known
that he is the oldest living human on the planet, it is only
hypothesized that he is the Wandering Jew of Biblical legend."
Again, there is no evidence that Kiel is the oldest living human
either.
3.1.11 Was there an Angel designed but not shown in the series?
--------------------------------------------------------
When Eva was aired in Japan, a contest took place where Japanese
viewers had to draw an original Angel and send it to Gainax. The
winner got his Angel drawn by one of the Gainax artists. Anyway
that picture was first published in the March 1996 issue of
Animage and it had the title "Eva Saishu Kessen" which translates
to "last battle of Eva". Now because of this title Animage had to
add a note that specified that the picture really had nothing to
do with the actual end of the TV series (which by that point
hadn't been screened yet).
The Angel was designed by Satou "Diemay" Daimei (Tokyo).
His notes on his sketch are as follows:
* Angel's height: 100 m
* The Core is on its forehead.
* He calls its strange head-horn thing its "Charm Point".
* The 1st and 2nd arms contain "Deutron Rifles" which are "more
powerful than the Positron Rifles of the Evas", according to
Diemay.
* The 3rd and 4th arms have some kind of claws.
That pictures was never in the series or the movies, or anything
else official, it was just a one off drawing by a Gainax artist
for a guy who won a competition.
"Diemay" once posted to JAE
<http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=38204D75.D0B6D4F9%40ce.mbn.
or.jp&oe=ISO-2022-JP&output=gplain>. He just said (in Japanese)
"It's just gossip around here? And they're all foreigners... this
is under Japan.*, right? I don't feel like writing here. Bye."
and he left.
3.1.12 What did Gendou say to Ritsuko at the end of EoE?
-------------------------------------------------
Near the end of the End of Evangelion movie Gendou whispered
something to Ritsuko to which she replied "Liar!" Many people
believe that Gendou said "I love you", but this cannot be
confirmed. Gendou's line is not in the scripts, storyboards or
anywhere else. It seems we were never meant to know what he said.
We can only guess.
3.2. Storyline Related Questions
===========================
3.2.1 In episode 16, how does Eva 01 get into the Sphere/Shadow
after "falling" into the Sea of Dirac?
-------------------------------------------------------------
While a bit complicated to explain fully, it is easiest to think
that when Unit 01 was dragged into the Sea of Dirac, it was
actually entering another universe, that is kind of parallel with
our own. So if Eva 01 was to move about in the parallel universe,
then "come back" into our universe, it wouldn't be in the same
place that it entered that universe (in other words, spacial
coordinates are the same in both universes). So when Unit 01
arrived back in this universe, it arrived actually inside the
sphere. Like with a lot of things in NGE, this is up to
interpretation.
3.2.2 In episode 20, how does Shinji's plugsuit get into the Entry
Plug?
-------------------------------------------------------------
After Shinji's 400% Synch ratio, he is dissolved/absorbed into
the Eva/Entry Plug. However, when he went into the Eva, he was
wearing street clothes, and we distinctly see the plug suit. This
confuses many of the more vigilant newbies, however Ritsuko
explains that Shinji's ego gives a kind of "pseudo substance to
his plug suit" (so just watch episode 20 again carefully).
3.2.3 How does Eva 01 move without power?
-----------------------------------
Three times during the series we see Eva 01 move without power
and sometimes without a conscious pilot. The Evas however are not
merely robots, they are living creatures as well, so maybe power
is only needed for the pilot / NERV to control the Evas. If power
wasn't present, perhaps the creature that the Eva is moves on
it's own accord. That is when we see the Eva move without power,
it is usually quite berserk. Like with a lot of things in NGE,
this is up to interpretation as no hard explanation is given.
3.2.4 I do not understand Eva! What happened?
---------------------------------------
_"Evangelion is like a puzzle, you know. Any person can see it
and give his/her own answer. In other words, we're offering
viewers to think by themselves, so that each person can imagine
his/her own world. We will never offer the answers, even in the
theatrical version. As for many Evangelion viewers, they may
expect us to provide the 'all-about Eva' manuals, but there is no
such thing. Don't expect to get answers by someone. Don't expect
to be catered to all the time. We all have to find our own
answers."_ - Anno Hideaki - PA #43, translated by Miyako Graham

3.3. Minor Details and Interesting Facts
===================================
3.3.1 What do the organisation names mean?
------------------------------------
The names of the various organisations NERV, SEELE and GEHIRN are
taken from the German.
Der Nerv = Nerve
Das Gehirn = Brain
Die Seele = Soul
3.3.2 Beer and coffee facts
---------------------
The name of Misato's beer was changed to Yebichu when it was
aired on TV and then to Yebisu for the Video release. Boa Beer
and it's brand name "Kuroshio Bussan" are references to the Boa
Juice from "Sora Tobu Yurei Sen" a 1969 SF anime movie.
She drinks coffee, after Kaji's death. "UCG" is a reference to an
actual coffee brand called "UCC" (Anno's favourite coffee brand
^^).

3.3.3 The timeline of NGE
-------------------
Scratchbuilt's FAQ has a good timeline of events
<http://www.evafaq.com/timeline.htm>.
3.3.4 What do the characters' names mean?
-----------------------------------
The following information was taken from the Essay page
<http://www.gainax.co.jp/hills/anno/essay1.html> on Anno's
official web page <http://www.gainax.co.jp/hills/anno/>. It was
translated by massangeana (Ken Masuyma).
Ikari Shinji: Ikari [anchor] is a component of a ship. It's also
the name of my friend when I was a college student. Shinji is
also named after my friend for many years [Higuchi Shinji]. Since
both his wife and daughter's names are used as Anime characters,
I wanted to make them an anime family. Sorry, Shin-chan.
Ayanami Rei: Ayanami is named after a ship of the former Japan
navy. Rei is just a pun of 'rei' [zero], but actually named after
Hino Rei of Sailor Moon. It was a beit to invite Iku-chan
(Ikuhara Kunihiko) as a staff, but he ran away. Too bad.
Souryuu Asuka Langley: Souryuu is named after a ship of the
former Japan navy [different kanji]. Langley from the US navy
ship. Asuka is named after Wada Shinji's manga heroine
["Chou-Shoujo Asuka"].
Katsuragi Misato: Katsuragi is named after a ship of the former
Japan navy. Misato is a heroine of Narita Minako's manga [Izumi
Misato of "Aitsu"].
Kaji Ryouji: Kaji [rudder] is a component of a ship. Ryouji is
also from a hero of Narita Minako's manga [Sawada Ryouji of
"Aitsu"].
Ikari Gendou: Gendou is borrowed from another anime project that
was aborted. I didn't notice Gendou and Shinji is the same
combination with Ishikawa Ken's manga until one of my friends
pointed out. [I think he means Kuruma Shin'ichi and Kuruma Genzou
of "Majuu Sensen"] His former name Rokubungi [sextant] is also a
component of a ship. Just FYI, Asuka Rei of "Reideen" is also a
coincidence.
Fuyutsuki Kouzou: Fuyutsuki is named after a ship of the former
Japan navy. Kouzou is just I thought it sounds well.
Ikari Yui: Yui sounds like Rei, and also a pun [only one].
Kiel Lorentz: Kiel is a component of a ship [keel]. Lorentz is
named after a zoologist or something, but I can't remember well.
Am I becoming senile? Oh, well.
Akagi Naoko: Naoko is named after a friend of mine when I was an
elementary school child.
Souryuu Kyouko Zeppelin: Kyouko is also from Wada Shinji's manga.
Zeppelin is named after a ship of the German navy that was never
completed.
Pen-Pen: Super straightforward naming, but I thought the
reduplication sounds cute. His official name is the 2nd power of
Pen. I was reluctant at first, but it appeared the show because
we thought we need a mascot animal. The show is set in a
hot-spring resort Hakone, and one associates a monkey to a
hot-spring. But that is no fun, so we decided to make it a
penguin, most unsuited animal in a hot-spring. I remember
"Hot-spring penguin" is Sadamoto's idea.
Hyuuga Makoto: Hyuuga is named after a ship of the former Japan
navy, but what was Makoto? I don't remember. Maybe because I
liked Shinsen-gumi of Shiba Ryou[tarou]? Sorry, I'm not sure
about this one either.
Aoba Shigeru: Aoba is named after a ship of the former Japan
navy. Shigeru is a spoof of the movie title "Aoba Shigereru"
directed by Okamoto Kihachi.
Ibuki Maya: Both Ibuki and Maya are named after a ship of the
former Japan navy because they sounded good. Ibuki is also the
name of the captain in "Kaette kita Ultraman," my personal
favorite. I chose Maya because I love Takao-class heavy cruisers
best after Yamato-class battleships.
Suzuhara Touji: I borrowed his name from Murakami Ryuu's novel
["Ai to Gensou no Fascism"] I read on my friend's recommendation.
Aida Kensuke: Also from Murakami's novel. BTW I was just
interested in a character "Zero" in this novel, rather than the
story about revolution and dictatorship itself.
Horaki Hikari: Horaki also comes from Murakami's novel. Hikari,
and her sisters Nozomi and Kodama are Tokaido Shinkansen express
train names.
Nagisa Kaworu: This character was named by the screenplay writer
Satsukawa Akio. Nagisa [beach] is a name related to the sea. Also
the kanji 'nagisa' consists of katakana SHI and kanji SHA,
therefore he's SHISHA (angel). He said it also comes from the
movie director Oshima Nagisa. But what is Kaworu? Sorry, I will
ask him next time.
Tokita [Shirou], Manda and Yasugi of episode 7 also come from
Murakami's novel. Takahashi Nozoku of episode 11 comes from the
name of a production manager and my friend [Takahashi Nozomu of
Studio Ghibli. Actually Ghibli did animation work of this
episode]. It's a in-joke by staff. Characters in episode 15 etc.
names also follow a hidden convention. Guessing the rule might be
fun when you have time.
3.3.5 What do the Angels' names mean?
-------------------------------
1st Angel: Adam
2nd Angel: Lilith
3rd Angel: Sachiel (water)
4th Angel: Shamshel (day)
5th Angel: Ramiel (thunder)
6th Angel: Gaghiel (fish)
7th Angel: Israfel (music)
8th Angel: Sandalphon (embryo)
9th Angel: Matarael (rain)
10th Angel: Sahaquiel (sky)
11th Angel: Ireul (fear)
12th Angel: Leliel (night)
13th Angel: Bardiel (hail)
14th Angel: Zeruel (strength)
15th Angel: Arael (bird)
16th Angel: Armisael (womb)
17th Angel: Tabris (free will)
18th Angel: Lilin (humans)
3.3.6 What are the characters' blood types?
-------------------------------------
Ikari Shinji : A (Ogata Megumi : B)
Katsuragi Misato : AO (Mitsuishi Kotono : AO)
Ayanami Rei : unknown (Hayashibara Megumi : O)
Soryuu Asuka Langley : O (Miyamura Yuko : O)
Akagi Ritsuko : B (Yamaguchi Yuriko : B)
Ikari Gendou : A (Tachiki Fumihiko : A)
Fuyutsuki Kozo : AB (Kiyokawa Motomu : AB)
3.3.7 Where can I find out more about Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac?
----------------------------------------------------------
You can try searching Google
<http://www.google.com/search?as_q=Paul+Adrien+Maurice+Dirac> for
information.
(From Encyclopedia.com
<http://www.encyclopedia.com/articlesnew/03681.html>) "Dirac,
Paul Adrien Maurice Pronounced As: dirak , 1902-84, English
physicist. He was educated at the Univ. of Bristol and St. John's
College, Cambridge, and became professor of mathematics at
Cambridge in 1932. In 1928, Dirac published a version of quantum
mechanics that took into account the theory of relativity (see
quantum theory). One consequence of his theory was the prediction
of negative energy states for the electron, implying the
existence of an antiparticle to the electron; this antiparticle,
the positron, was discovered in 1932 by C. D. Anderson. Dirac's
equation for the motion of a particle is a relativistic
modification of the Schrodinger wave equation, the basic equation
of quantum mechanics. For their work Dirac and Erwin Schrodinger
shared the 1933 Nobel Prize in Physics. Dirac also received the
Copley Medal of the Royal Society in 1952 for this and other
contributions to the quantum theory, including his formulation
(with Enrico Fermi) of the Fermi-Dirac statistics and his work on
the quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation. He wrote The
Principles of Quantum Mechanics (1930, 4th ed. 1958)."
3.3.8 Why do people sometimes refer to NGE as "Shin Seiki
Evangelion"?
-------------------------------------------------------------
"Shin Seiki Evangelion" is the name of the Japanese series we all
know and love. On the title frame from the series, the small
Japanese writing above the word "Evangelion" mean "Shinseiki"
(with the 1st character being "shin", the 2nd "sei" and the 3rd
"ki"), and are written in Kanji. The writing under "Evangelion"
is katakana, and it says "Evangelion". If you're wondering how
you get a "va" in Katakana, it's an "u" with tenten followed by a
small "a". (Though this is only ever written. When speaking,
people say "Eba" or "Ebangerion".)
The name used in the English speaking world is "Neon Gensis
Evangelion" which was selected by Gainax. "Shinseiki" can be
translated to "new century".
3.3.9 A brief note on The Lance of Longinus
-------------------------------------
The 'Lance of Longinus' as seen in NGE, is a huge spear shaped
like a double helix. It was used by Ayamani to destroy the 15th
angel, Arael. It is also necessary for Seele's version of the
Human Completion Project. This is definitely a reference to the
Biblical character Saint Longinus
(Taken from Catholic Online Saints
<http://www.catholic.org/saints/saints/longinus.html>)
"St. Longinus is the centurion who pierced the side of Our Lord
while He was hanging on the Cross. St. Longinus, who was nearly
blind, was healed when some of the blood and water from Jesus
fell into his eyes. It was then he exclaimed "Indeed, this was
the Son of God!" [Mark 15:39]. St. Longinus then converted, Left
the army, took instruction from the apostles and became a monk in
Cappadocia. There he was arrested for his faith, his teeth forced
out and tongue cut off. However, St. Longinus miraculously
continued to speak clearly and managed to destroy several idols
in the presence of the governor. The governor, who was made blind
by the demons that came from the idols, had his sight restored
when St. Longinus was being beheaded, because his blood came in
contact with the governors' eyes. St. Longinus' relics are now in
the church of St Augustine, in Rome. His Lance is contained in
one of the four pillars over the altar in the Basilica of St
Peter's in Rome."

3.3.10 Shinji's photo of Misato
------------------------
The kiss mark on the photo of Misato that Shinji holds is by a
female staff of GAINAX studio. The handwriting on the same photo
is that of the Director himself.
3.3.11 Misato's Car
------------
Misato's car is a Renault A-310. She has 2 of these cars, the one
in episode 1 is a modified version, with a right hand steering
wheel and battery powered. Her second car appears in episode 4
(non-modified) which is left side steering and petrol powered.
She is a car maniac and also has a number of other classic (in
that era) cars.
3.3.12 The Geofront
------------
The GeoFront is 900m high, and 6km across. Access is by car train
and monorail.
3.3.13 The A^10 Nerve
--------------
The Evangelion are controlled mainly by linking with the cranial
nerves of the pilot. Of these, the most important is this A^10
nerve. The human brain stem has four rows of neural nuclei
running vertically along its center, and the two outside rows of
this arrangement are called the A nerves. Counting from the
bottom, the tenth nerve in these rows is the A^10 nerve. The A^10
nerve passes from the brain stem through the lower optic thalamus
and is distributed to the sincipital portion of the cerebral
cortex comprising most of the frontal, parietal and temporal
lobes. It is associated with higher order brain functions such as
memory, cognisance and the execution of movement, and with
emotions such as anxiety, fear, happiness and pleasure. In
addition, it is also said to play an important role in affection
between parent and child, and between lovers. _[From the Death &
Rebirth theatrical program, supplied by Michael Wignall]_
3.3.14 How big are the Evangelion units?
---------------------------------
The official height of an Evangelion changes between 40 and 200
meters (130-650 feet). The Evas literally change in height from
situation to situation. The animators make them however big they
want them to be for dramatic effect, in some cases they climb up
buildings, in others they easily step over them.
3.3.15 What is the symbolism of the cross in Evangelion?
-------------------------------------------------
When assistant director Kazuya Tsurumaki was asked, at Otakon
2001, "Can you explain the symbolism of the cross in Evangelion?"
He replied:
"There are a lot of giant robot shows in Japan, and we did want
our story to have a religious theme to help distinguish us.
Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought
it would be mysterious. None of the staff who worked on Eva are
Christians. There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we
just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool. If we
had known the show would get distributed in the US and Europe we
might have rethought that choice."

4. Specific Questions Regarding the Movies
=======================================
4.1. Movie Releases and Related Information
======================================
4.1.1 How many NGE movies are there?
------------------------------
Three. "Evangelion: Death and Rebirth" (Which contains
"Evangelion: Death" and "Evangelion: Rebirth"), "The End of
Evangelion" (Which contains "Air", and "Magokoro o, Kimi ni"),
and Revival of Evangelion (Contains "Evangelion: Death (True)^2",
"Air" and "Magokoro o, Kimi ni")
"Evangelion: Death" is some kind of "recap" of episodes 1-24.
"Evangelion: Death (True)^2" is the third and last version (a
"director's cut"). (about 70 minute long?)
"Evangelion: Rebirth" is the beginning of episode 25'. (about 30
minute long?)
"Air" is episode 25'. (about 45 minute long)
"Magokoro o, Kimi ni" is episode 26'. (about 45 minute long)
4.1.2 When/how are they being released outside of Japan?
--------------------------------------------------
The movies are being released by Manga Entertainment
<http://www.manga.com>.
The release date for Death and Rebirth was July 30. The release
date of End of Evangelion is set for September 24. They're being
released in Dub and Sub VHS and DVD formats.
4.1.3 Are episodes 25 & 26 an alternate ending to the End of
Evangelion movie?
-------------------------------------------------------------
No. Episodes 25 & 26 (the ones released by ADV) are concurrent
with the End of Evangelion movie, albeit from a different
perspective. Episodes 25 & 26 is an ending for the characters
within NGE, while the End of Evangelion movie is the story ending
to NGE. They are concurrent as scenes in Episodes 25 & 26 show
scenes in EoE.
4.1.4 Was the song, "Komm, Susser Tod" written especially for the
movie?
-------------------------------------------------------------
Yes. Anno originally wrote a piece in Japanese (it is included in
the "The End of Evangelion" CD booklet) which set the mood for
the song. The song was meant to be subtitled in Japanese during
the movie.
4.2. The Movie Pamphlets
===================
4.2.1 What is the EoE Pamphlet/Red Cross Book?
----------------------------------------
The End of Evangelion - Theatrical Program is a booklet in a
landscape A4 setting which was first sold during The End of
Evangelion's initial theatrical run in Japan. It originally cost
800 yen and is black except for a Red Cross stamped across the
cover that says "The End of Evangelion"
The booklet is divided into several sections which include
notations from the Japanese Voice Actors, an interview with
Deputy Director Kazuya Tsurumaki and scene summaries. It also
includes a Production, a Commentary and a Glossary section which
were by far the most interesting because they talked about why
the films were made and what went on during their production.
The information within The End of Evangelion - Theatrical Program
is considered official and canon because the booklet was approved
as accurate by the Gainax staff of Evangelion. This is one of the
only instances where we have heard Gainax's direct words on the
different mysteries of Neon Genesis Evangelion and is considered
by fans to be the one true Gospel.
[Michael Wignall's preface to Bochan_Bird's translation
<http://everything2.com/?node=The+End+of+Evangelion+-+Theatrical+
Program>]
4.2.2 What are the "Evangelion: Death" and "Evangelion: Rebirth"
Pamphlet?
-------------------------------------------------------------
[No Info Yet]
4.3. Questions With Movie Spoilers
=============================
4.3.1 Is Lilith's soul in Rei?
------------------------
Yes. The most obvious indicator is when Rei returns to Lilith.
Rei: "Tadaimai" ("I'm back")
Lilith: "Okaerinasai" ("Welcome home")
There is also the Rei Ayanami passage in the EoE theatrical
program which states: "The First Children, and dedicated pilot of
Eva-00. A young girl who apparently lacks emotions. Her body was
created from the salvaged remains of Yui Ikari after Yui was
taken into the Eva, and numerous Rei clones were then prepared in
Terminal Dogma so that when one Rei dies she can be replaced by
another. The present Rei is the third. The first was killed by
Dr. Naoko Akagi, and the second died in battle against the 16th
Angel. Although the personalities of these three Reis differ from
one another, this is due to environmental factors. Their soul is
one and the same, and it appears to have been that of Lilith. At
the final stage of the Instrumentality Project, Rei betrayed
Gendou Ikari, returned to Lilith of her own judgment and
entrusted the future to Gendou's son - Shinji Ikari. Birth date:
unknown."
So that states directly that Rei has Lilith's soul. (Taken from a
post by Michael Wignall)
4.3.2 What are the white and black moons?
-----------------------------------
The White moon is a cavity in the Arctic where Adam was found (by
the Katsuragi expedition). In the redone episode 21 we see a
subterranean scan of the Arctic which shows the White Moon. The
Black Moon is the Geofront (where the Pyramid and NERV reside).
The white moon is where Adam was found, and the Black Moon is
where Lilith was found (though never stated, it is a logical
assumption), the Black Moon has also been called "Lilith's Egg"
in the EoE movie.
4.3.3 Where was Lilith found?
-----------------------
It is assumed that Lilith was found inside the partially filled
Geofront ("Black Moon").
4.3.4 Are Rei and Shinji having sex in the "Sea of LCL" scene?
--------------------------------------------------------
No. Since Rei is just sitting there at most they could be having
symbolic intercourse, which would be representing a union.
4.3.5 Who are the 3 women seen standing during the live action
scene?
-------------------------------------------------------------
You can see Asuka (Miyamura Yuko), Misato (Mitsuishi Kotono) and
Rei (Hayashibara Megumi).
"These scenes are excerpts of what the live action sequence of
episode 26' was supposed to be. Anno couldn't make it correctly
(for reasons I'm not aware of), so all we can see is a few live
shots of Tokyo and the one you noticed with "Rei", "Asuka" and
"Misato", with Shinji and Rei talking in background." (From a
post by Olivier Hague)
4.3.6 Are Shinji and Asuka left to repopulate the world?
--------------------------------------------------
Not really. As Rei said, "As long as your heart can imagine your
own shape, everyone can return to the human form." And then Yui
said, "Don't worry, every single life-form has the power to
return to their original form. Every life-form has the power to
live." This suggests that everyone is able to return to earth
when they want to. It has been suggested that Shinji and Asuka
are just the first to return.
4.3.7 Is the final scene dream or reality?
------------------------------------
The final scene, of Shinji and Asuka on the beach, is reality.
Originally it was planned to be longer showing the graves of the
people who had died. This would have shown that a reasonable
amount of time had passed.
4.3.8 What was going on with Gendou's hand in the beginning of ep
26'?
-------------------------------------------------------------
Gendou had Adam embedded into his hand.
4.3.9 Why is Shinji strangling Asuka at the end?
------------------------------------------
We don't know how long either of them were there on the beach, we
don't know how long Shinji may have been alone in the world, and
we don't really know if Asuka just happened to materialize during
that scene, or if she had returned sometime earlier. At any rate,
if Shinji returned to an empty world, even if for a few days, the
feeling of being the only person left in the world can be a very
disturbing though. With Shinji, that thought would be even more
disturbing, especially if he began to blame himself for TI. We've
seen how fragile both Shinji's and Asuka's psyches can be. It may
not take much to push Shinji over the edge, into a state of mild
psychosis. Anno does give some clues that Shinji had been back on
Earth for some time, but there's no solid evidence to show how
long he'd been there. And we don't see Asuka return per se, so
she may have been with Shinji for some time.

5. Fan-Art, Fan-Fiction and Hentai
===============================
5.1 Where can I get Evangelion fanfiction?
--------------------------------------
There is a lot of Evangelion fanfiction. The following sites are
considered by regulars to be some of the best on the net: -
Evangelion:R <http://www.eva-r.com> - Asuka's Notebook
<http://aterizak.free.fr/an/site/english/index.html> - Disaster's
Fanfiction <http://www.disfanfic.net>. Or you could try the Anime
Web Turnpike these are all to be found on the links pages.
A good archive of fan fics can be found at the r.a.a.c ftp site.
<ftp://ftp.cs.ubc.ca/pub/archive/anime-fan-works>
5.2 Where can I get NGE Fan Art?
----------------------------
There are many sites on the Internet. A quick search should turn
up a number of them. Disaster's website
<http://www.disfanfic.net> has a large number of pictures of Rei.
5.3 Where can I get Evangelion images?
----------------------------------
You could try searching the Anime Web Turnpike. Take note that
Gainax, the producers of Evangelion, have published a list of
images that they approve for website use, so if that's your aim
it might be useful to visit Gainax's site for more info.
5.4 Where can I get Anime Music Videos?
-----------------------------------
Many file sharing networks host anime music videos, including
Evangelion ones.
Some you can try are:
* Direct Connect <http://www.neo-modus.com>
* Kazza Lite <http://www.kazaalite.com>
Some web sites you can try:
* Anime Music Videos <http://animemusicvideos.org>
* Doki Doki Productions <http://www.fiction.org/www/ddp/>
* Aluminum Studios <http://www.aluminumstudios.net>
But there are many others, so try searching the web.
Tessai's FTP server also has some videos.
5.5 Fan Fiction lingo
-----------------
There are number of words or acronyms which are used in relation
to fan created fiction (FanFics). Here are a few:
Lime - Sometimes called lemon scented. These fanfics make passing
references to sex or sexuality. Nothing too strong, but they may
suggest things...
Lemon - This usually means were will be sex scenes depicted. It
does not mean that this is a full porno, but it is for adult
readers.
ACC - Author Created Character(s). This means that the author has
created a character and used them in the story. This is usually
seen when the author is writing in a well known Anime universe
but has included a new character.
SI - Self Insertion. This means that the author has written
themself into their story. This is usually seen when the author
is writing in a well known Anime universe but has included
theirself, often as the hero.
5.6. Hentai, Ecchi, Etc
==================
5.6.1 Where can I get NGE Hentai?
---------------------------
Like most successful anime, Evangelion does contain it's own
underground of Hentai (pornographic images/movies/manga). You
will find no Hentai in this site. There is a "well known" (or
infamous) Eva Hentai video, this is available to download from
Tessai's FTP site.
5.6.2 What's the difference between hentai/ecchi/doujinshi/etc?
---------------------------------------------------------
When David Watson was asked on RAAM <news:rec.arts.anime.misc>
"What exactly is the difference between hentai and ecchi anime?"
his answer was: "If a Japanese woman calls you an ecchi, you
still have a chance with her. If a Japanese woman calls you a
hentai, forget about it."
"Hentai" means "pervert". "Ecchi" is the Japanese pronunciation
of the letter H (for "Hentai").
