For a largish house with absolutely no insulation, we're paying
something like an average of Y20,000 a month *gulp* for electricity,
water, and mains gas (LPG is only out in the countryside).

Try Googling for "monthly mansion tokyo" (or replace "tokyo" with
another city). This <http://www.gaijinpot.com/housing.php> might help

Renting a non-furnished house will probably be more difficult (depending
on whether your employer will help), and you'd also need to pay out at
least four months of rent in advance as deposit. I haven't encountered
any place that rents out furniture--the usual method is to buy cheap and
sell it at "sayonara" sales, or look out for said sales.

(Thinks: fast food, every day?) No idea there, since I mostly cook at
home. But I recently kept accounts of everything I spent over a couple
of months, and found I'm paying Y5000 a day for the two of us on food
and other consumables (such as soap), but excluding booze (and meat).

To get a work visa, your employer has to promise you will be paid
Y300,000 per month (note that he doesn't have to promise to pay it...).
