Much like the Metal Gear series, the Final Fantasy franchise is also
celebrating its 25th anniversary. Unlike Konami, Square Enix didn't
announce a new installment in its primary cash cow or a Hollywood movie,
but it will be releasing a ridiculously large gift set which includes
all 13 major, non-sequel or spinoff Final Fantasy games (specifically,
the PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 versions). The set also includes an
artbook, a Yoshitaka Amano print of his not that thrilling 25th
anniversary art piece, some kind of video disc, a two-CD music
collection, and some sort of horrible bullshit in-game Moogle earring
for Final Fantasy XIV. All this will run you about $450, which is
not=C2=A0insignificant=C2=A0for a bunch of games you probably already
own at least one copy of (maybe more). You can see pics of all the items
at Anime News Network=A0 , if you're so inclined.
If you're not entirely enthused about the collector's set, you might be
pleased to know that Square said Final Fantasy Versus XIII is still
coming, but of course presented no info, screenshots or video as proof.
So basically, for Final Fantasy's 25th anniversary, Square is rehashing
a ton of shit we don't need and already bought, and refusing to give us
anything new. That sounds about right.

This sucks if you have a PS3 slim.
Ah never mind, I've read below in other comments that they're physically
using ps1 and 2 disks, which is idiotic. I thought it was bad enough
they were using a psp disk as well. They're really trying to milk us as
much as possible with this.
Yeah I'm confused about this too, because they're using 4 disks on games
like FF7 and 8, but if these will be on the PS3, aka blueray, why would
they need that many? I'm sure all of FF7, for example, could fit on one
blueray, so is it just for the effect of switching disks like the old
games? I don't know much about the specs of blueray disks so someone
feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on that.
I don't have to buy this... and I won't.
This... is terrible planning, really. It's useless to hardcore fans, who
most likely already own some or all of the games included (and perhaps
in better versions). It's useless the casual fans for similar reasons.
Too pricey and specialized (in terms of console ownership) to bring in
new fans. And it's exclusively focused on Sony. I understand
PlayStation's been a huge part of the franchise since VII, but
Nintendo's pulled their weight (and the series came to life on there,
anyway). I guess blah blah something about Microsoft, but really, it
feels like they didn't put much thought into this at all.
Maybe its loyal customers shouldn't keep buying the games then. There's
no incentive to change things if you're still making money. It's why
Michael Bay continues his reign of awfulness.
*shrugs* You don't have to buy this you know. Just saying. Anyway I'm
going to Distant Worlds in London in November for the 25th anniversary.
That's good enough for me.
Good to know Square still hates its loyal customers. Moving along...
=C2=A0Since the Vita doesn=C2=B4t use UMDs, that seems unlikely.
When Mario turned 25, Nintendo had to decency to make all the included
games playable on the Wii... just sayin... (not a fanboy, don't even own
a wii)
That's just a terrible plan. =C2=A0Confirming that this is just an
absolute waste.
=C2=A0"Worst birthday ever."
Now that=C2=B4s a shitty birthday
=C2=A0Agreed. Also, FF1, 2 and 4 have been cleaned up since the discs
and are available for download from the Japanese store now. So there are
clearly versions of those three games that are playable on the PS3 and
much better than the discs in that box. Why not just put the updated
versions on disc?
He shoots the CDs out of his sleeves.
So I'm supposed to spend $500 on a game collection that essentially
requires me to own every Sony gaming console to play? Chances are, if
you still have a working PS1 or PS2, you already own those respective
Final Fantasy titles. For the 25th Anniversary, you really think they
would have thought this through. Put it all on the PS3. I wouldn't even
look for them to be HD remakes or anything.
Containing the music collection? Then it would be perfect.
I would have preferred a giant statue of an 8-bit black mage, myself.
From what I read on the Escapist, this has FF 1, 2, 4-9 on PS1, FF 3 on
PSP (UMD), FF 10-12 on PS2 and FF13 for PS3. No word on any versions
besides Playstation
What a dumbass move... FF, FFII, FFIV, FFV, FFVI, FFVII,FFVIII,FFIX are
PS1 discs (OK I can play those on a PS3 no problem) FFIII is a PSP game
while=C2=A0FFX, FFXII are PS2 GAMES!? Great, so I need 3 Fucking
Consoles to play this collection!? =C2=A0(I'm ignoring the ps2 FFMMORPG)
Maybe PORTING THE FREAKING PS2 and PSP TITLES TO PS3 would have been a
better idea...
I'm confused about the formats.=C2=A0 For example, Is FF7 on a PSOne
disc or a PS3 disc?=C2=A0 Or when you say versions, do you mean you'll
get software for FF1/2 that was on the PSOne Final Fantasy Origins disc
(versus what was released on the NES and Famicom)?=C2=A0 I also doubt
it, but is this going to be done for 360 as well?
=C2=A0I really love the music, Which is why we are going to Distant
worlds in Chicago at the end of the year, Nobuo Uematsu will be there,
so if he ends up kidnapped and forced to write music against his will,
it was totally not me.
Should have been a=C2=A0mammoth collection of every soundtrack,
ever.=C2=A0
