Rumor: Sonic Speeds to Revolution
Is SEGA underway with an exclusive new Sonic title for Nintendo's next
generation console? Find out inside.
by Matt Casamassina

January 19, 2006 - Sources close to SEGA have told IGN Revolution that
the developer is working on a new entry into the Sonic the Hedgehog
franchise for Nintendo's next generation console. The title,
purportedly developed by a "top-tier" SEGA team led by Yuji Naka, will
not be a port of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game tentatively dubbed
"Sonic the Hedgehog [next gen]." Instead, say insiders, it is an
entirely original effort designed from the ground up to take advantage
of Revolution's unique controller. No further details are available at
this time.

While it's easy to shrug this news off as a no-brainer, it is
nevertheless an important development because it suggests that
powerhouse publishers are thinking about ways to make innovative games
on Nintendo's upcoming platform rather than just porting over dumbed
down versions of their Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 projects.
Furthermore, one source we spoke with alleged that they have known
about a Revolution Sonic the Hedgehog game for at least two months,
which indicates that it isn't a freshly hatched concept. We're keeping
our fingers crossed that something might show at E3 2006, which
explodes this May in Los Angeles.
More than a decade ago, SEGA and Nintendo were big rivals, but in
recent times the companies have enjoyed a fruitful partnership. Sonic
Team chose to make GameCube the official home of its hedgehog mascot,
releasing ports of its hit Dreamcast titles as well as wholly original
Sonic efforts for the system. Meanwhile, Nintendo contracted SEGA
developers like Amusement Vision to co-create GCN efforts such as
F-Zero GX. The Big N's own Shigeru Miyamoto even entertained the idea
of a mascot cross-over, in which Sonic could partner or square off
against stars including Mario or Luigi. It is, therefore, not
surprising that SEGA would continue to throw extra support Nintendo's
way.

When contacted, SEGA would not confirm that such a project is underway.

"SEGA has not announced its official plans to support Revolution," a
spokesperson for the company told us. "We are committed to creating
great game content for all viable platforms, so when Revolution rolls
out, it would be a safe bet to assume that we will be there."

IGN Revolution reminds readers that this information could not yet be
substantiated and therefore should not be taken as an official
confirmation.

Sonic to Hit the Nintendo Revolution?
Posted Jan 20, 2006, 9:58 PM ET

Rumor has it that the blue hedgehog is headed for a unique Nintendo
Revolution title.

GameSHOUT has learned that there will be an all new exclusive Sonic the
Hedgehog game to look forward to on the Nintendo Revolution. As we
know, a Sonic the Hedgehog title is in the works for the other Next Gen
consoles, so this news is extremely interesting. While the Sony PS3 and
the Microsoft Xbox 360 get normal Sonic the Hedgehog games, Nintendo
Revolution owners get a completely new unique Sonic the Hedgehog
experience.

This seems to be the case for many games, in fact. In a recent VIP IGN
message board post, a poster who is, from what we can gather, an
Ubisoft employee, has made

this comment:

"I'd love to talk 'in-depth' about next-gen systems too, more
specifically PS3 and Revolution but, as you can imagine, we're under
embargo to release any details about those systems. Also, I don't want
to speak on behalf of Ubisoft as to which system is going to win until
they've all launched. Last thing I need is a NOA/SCEA/MS representative
calling Ubisoft saying that I was bad talking their system. All I can
say is - I think 'someone' is back in the race."

Obviously this guy was encrypting his statement so it can be figured
out, and most definitely that "someone" is Nintendo. Why would he refer
to Sony as being "back in the race" when Sony's been leading the race?
If this is the case, what does Ubisoft have in store for the
Revolution, as well?

Revolution Sonic In Development January 19, 2006

by: Phillip Levin

RUMOR: Inside sources tell IGN that a Revolution-only Sonic game is in
development.

IGN Revolution wrote a report today saying that inside sources told the
publication that a top-tier Sega team, lead by Sonic creator Yuji Naka,
is working on an exclusive Sonic title for Nintendo Revolution. This
supposed Sonic project is being developed ground-up for Revolution and
will take advantage of the console's unique free-hand controller. It
is an entirely new Sonic title and is not the same game that is
currently tentatively titled "Sonic the Hedgehog [next-gen]," which
has already been announced for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

What's more, this Revolution-only Sonic title has reportedly been in
development for over two months.

When IGN asked Sega for comment about the rumored title, they were met
with the following response from a spokesman from the company, "SEGA
has not announced its official plans to support Revolution. We are
committed to creating great game content for all viable platforms, so
when Revolution rolls out, it would be a safe bet to assume that we
will be there."

We expect that this Sonic game might be officially announced, along
with a handful of other titles, at the upcoming Electronic
Entertainment Expo held in Los Angeles this May.

Rev] Sonic the Hedgehog coming to Revolution?
2:58 pm - N-Sider Staff |

According to IGN.com, Sega is developing an original Sonic the Hedgehog
title for the Nintendo Revolution console. The game is said to take
full advantage of the Revolution controller and is in development by a
team under the supervision of Sonic creator Yuji Naka. Therefore, the
game is not the same Sonic (tentatively named Sonic Next-Gen) currently
in development for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. This info doesn't come
as a surprise; after all, the Sonic Adventure titles appeal to the
Nintendo crowd and have sold the most units on the Nintendo GameCube.
Still, keep in mind Sega has yet to officially announce the Revolution
version of the game.

"SEGA has not announced its official plans to support Revolution," a
spokesperson for the company told IGN. "We are committed to creating
great game content for all viable platforms, so when Revolution rolls
out, it would be a safe bet to assume that we will be there."

SONIC SPEEDS ON TO REVOLUTION?

Is Sega's streaky blue hedgehog set to star in his own
Revolution-exclusive actioner?

10:00 2005 was a cruel year for Sega fans, as Sonic Team teased its
loyal fanbase with next-gen Sonic demos at both E3 and TGS, while
slapping cocky young upstart Shadow into the limelight with its most
recent hedgehog-related title. Fortunately, it seems concrete details
of the blue streak's triumphant next-gen return are finally beginning
to emerge.
According to IGN Revolution, the Sega mascot will be heading to
Nintendo's next-gen console in a game being developed by a "top tier"
development team, led by none other than Sonic creator Yuji Naka. The
game's said to be designed from the ground up for the Revolution,
specifically exploiting the machine's unique controller.

If the rumour turns out to be true, it's yet another indication that
Nintendo's next-gen console is set to enjoy some enthusiastic developer
support when it bursts out of hiding later this year.

Rumor: Sonic Revolution Underway
1/20/2006, 12:43pm Eastern Time

Could Sega's blue blur be ready for a Revolution?

IGN is reporting today that sources close to Sega are saying that a
Sonic the Hedgehog game for Revolution is already in development. Yuji
Naka himself is supposedly heading up the team that is working on the
project.

This news could be most impactful because, according to the same
reports, the Sonic game in development is not a port of the Sonic the
Hedgehog game already announced for Xbox 360 and PS3, but is rather a
totally new game designed from the start to use Revolution's interface.

In short, assuming these reports are true, it means that a third party
is developing a game specifically for Nintendo's platform instead of
porting an existing title over and slapping a motion-sensitive
interface onto it, which is one of Nintendo's goals for the next
generation.

Sega has neither confirmed nor denied these rumors, and has merely
stated that the company will probably support Revolution once it is
released.
