Not only pet dealers but also a toy company sells the land hermit crabs
in Japan.
TOMY, one of the biggest toy company in the nation sells the crabs in
the capsule as though packed fresh food. However, Marukan, the Osaka
based pet wholesaler sells the crabs in deli cups. (See the first link
below.)
Several flower shops also sell crabs. They treat them as live interiors
as so cut flowers. Other variety or gift shops sell the crabs together
with the glassware. The 'show cases' (that's how they call their
merchandises), some are only wine glasses, others are 1' cubic glass
cases. There're no room to raise, nor for the necessity goods
sustaining their lives. They are obviously considered as the objects,
not a subjects, but the expendables. Those lives are decoys to sell
their cheap, poor made profitable merchandises. There're still couple
of shops selling online even now winter time. They say, "we put heat
pack in the box, so no worry." But who knows if there'd be delay or
closure of traffic. They put only one heat pack that doesn't last no
longer one day. Of course none of those merchant knows how to raise,
what are necessary to survive. It's not their concern whether the small
creatures make it in captive. That's awful.
I'm wondering why Japanese are not strongly disagreeing against such
cruel manner. I thought the Japanese has a sense of 'issun no mushi
nimo gobu no tamashii'.
