actually, it turned out to be quite possible.  i was referred to a Mac
master who made it happen... like Luke Skywalker looking for Yoda, I
had to venture deep into his world to meet him.  that's right, you
guessed it, we met at a cosplay cafe in Akihabara.  there, he ran the
ibook in firewire target disk mode (though the display was blank and it
wouldn't fully boot, it would run in this mode) and burned my critical
stuff to DVD via his powerbook.

anyway, apple picked up the computer on friday evening, and it was
delivered back (on a sunday no less).  it was gone less than 48 hours,
all free, and it works great.

and they cleaned it.  ahh, Japan.
